Paradox of choices

Two days ago, I went to an electronics store to buy a music player (MP3). There were only two types of MP3 in the store: a JVJ which cost 500, 000 VND and a Sony which cost three times as much - 1,500,000 VND. As I only brought around 1, 000, 000 VND, I went for a JVJ, which was such an easy choice considering I knew a JVJ was also of good quality.

However, things might not have been that easy had I been offered ten different types ranging from 400, 000 VND to 1, 000, 000 VND. Having more choices means I would have had to stay  a little longer at the store listening to the salesman’s explanation about the special features of each type. Having more choices means I would have had a hard time deciding on which item I should select, and might have ended up  spending  more money unnecessarily. That is to say having many choices is not really a good thing. It can instead be a burden.

You may be attracted by the first item, then find the second one more interesting, the third one even more irresistible although the cost can be almost twice as high. It is okay-you can save up and come back, or borrow some money, so the price should not be a problem. However, the point is you start wondering if the item is worth it, or if your interest in it can last for a long time. What if there is a forth one that is equally good and more affordable, a fifth one that is of higher quality, or a sixth one that looks so unique? Maybe you had better wait for the new arrivals.

It is hard enough to be the sole decision maker, but it is even harder if the decision is not yours only. For example, in a recruiting campaign of a company, the company can choose among the candidates, but the chosen candidates can still reject the offer for different reasons, or the newly employed may leave their jobs after a short time working, which is a waste of resources.

Sometimes a waste of resources is not the biggest matter. Resources can be renewed. Time is not. Belief is not. Trust is not.
