I always think of my teacher’s saying when I see a scene of brokenness. He must've been kidding then, for “broken” and “happy” are like “chalk and cheese”- one is delicious, the other poisonous. Even so, we cannot throw it away because when it comes to chalkboard, cheese doesn’t work. And while chalk can be hazardous, its danger is being lessened. People have learnt to live with it, just as they have learnt to cope with their brokenness.
What is broken can be mended though not to the point of its former shape. It may no longer be displayed with pride in the guest house for everyone to see, yet it is still frequently visited in the storeroom. People are shocked when their things are broken, even more when such are those they have given a lot of thought and attention, or those we have idolized. They are haunted by the feeling of guilt though they’re not wholly responsible for the brokenness. Even when they are tolerated, they can’t help thinking of the moments before the accident. If only it hadn’t been broken. Would things ever change?
Everything in this life is so fragile. Things can be broken at any time if not handled carefully. Every minute, even thousands of people die of different causes. When they’re gone, nothing about them matters. Memories are only important to those involved, and a human life span is just 100 years or less. Life moves on with them not being a part of it.
