Who are you working for?

You may hear  the story of three  bricklayers who are asked “ What are you doing?” The first worker says, “It’s hot out here, and I have to lay all these bricks.” He goes on to complain about his day and the work that he has to do. The second worker answers “ I am working to earn $50 a day.”  The third says “I am helping to build the most beautiful museum the world has ever seen, and people will come for miles just to gaze upon its beauty."

Which of those bricklayers would you want to be?

All three bricklayers are doing the  same thing, working on  the same project. Their only difference is their attitude.

The first bricklayer suffers from his own job as he considers it a burden.
The second one does the job in exchange for payment which is his only concern and  motivation.
The third one is actively engaged in his job, and finds job satisfaction that goes beyond the salary that he receives. It is the third person who is the most likely to devote his time and energy to have his  work done in the best way possible despite having to work extra hours on unpaid or  unassigned tasks. It is the third peson who is the most likely to cooperate with and assist other workers in his team to fulfill their tasks as he understands the success of a project depends on every individual’s contribution. The third worker has a vision of what he is doing: not a boring lay-the-brick job but building a beautiful museum; therefore, he appreciates his job and tries his best to do every single task that he is involved. As he persists with his goal: “One day  people will come for miles just to gaze upon the museum’s  beauty,” he will not easily  leave his current job for a higher-paid one. In other word, he is likely  to stay loyal to his job even when he does not like his boss. Like many other employees, this worker may experience down moments at work, but these cannot be his excuses for not having the job done by the deadline or not working properly. To maintain a life long passion for his job, he propably knows how to make work interesting by doing the familiar task in an unfamiliar way. He also sets priority so that he can finish all the  tasks without feeling overloaded.  This worker will keep on learning to improve his skill and knowledge. These qualities not only  earn him his monthly paychecks but also trust and respect from his boss and his workmates.

Now do you know which bricklayer you want to be?
