I don't believe love like that ever exists, but it'd be nice if it did.
This is the story of unconditional love...
Nelson was so devoted to his work that he didn’t seem to have any other interest. And his life would’ve continued in that same boring way had he not met Sarah, a bold, sexy, and mysterious lady. She asked him, the one she had just met twice to stay with her for one month, and be " her November". When asked “ why him?”, she said she was just trying to help ‘ a man with problem”. When asked " why a month?"- She said "Because it's long enough to be meaningful, but short enough to stay out of trouble." He was reluctant at first, but when he lost his job, and felt like having no where to go, he came to her. They spent one month together enjoying simple life. Being with her, he understood life still had so much to offer, and to enjoy. He started to realize how he needed her, even much more than his work, and his time. He threw his cell phone and his watch, which he thought he could not live without, in a sink full of water and asked her to marry him. This is the part I love the most.
Nelson Moss: [throws his cell phone in a sink full of water]: Marry me!
Nelson Moss: [throws his watch]: Marry me! Sarah. Will you marry me?
(How I love his smile then. J)
She confessed to her friend that it was not the first time she had been proposed, but it was the first time she wanted to say Yes. She really fell in love.
Then came the saddest part of the movie. She had a cancer, and she hid it from him. When he finally found out, she asked him to leave because their November was over, and because she didn’t want him to see her looking hopeless in her deathbed. He begged her to let him stay. He even posted November calendars all over her apartment walls to say that it could always be November for them. But that couldn’t change her mind. He said before leaving: “I want you, Sarah.”- “You have me. You have me forever.”- she said. She took a scarf and put it over his eyes, kissed him for the last time and left. He stood there alone, probably thinking of his future without her or reminiscing their sweet November.
The movie ends with the romantic melody of ONLY TIME
Who can say
where the road goes
where the day flows
- only time
And who can say
if your love grows
as your heart chose
- only time
Who can say
why your heart sighs
as your love flies
- only time
And who can say
why your heart cries
when your love dies
- only time
What attracted me to watch the movie at first is the title Sweet November. I have a tendency to like anything related to November, but as for the author of the movie, there must be special reasons for him or her to name it Sweet November, not the other months of the year.
Perhaps it's because November is in mid winter when people feel the cold most clearly, and that easily makes them feel lonely. Therefore, they need someone around as a companion. When asking Nelson to stay with her, Sarah called it a win-win situation, for both of them were in need of a friend.
Perhaps November is close to the end of the year when people look back to what they have done in their whole year long to make some necessary adjustment. When staying with Sarah, Nelson had some time to look back on his past doing and thought of changes.
Perhaps November represents the last period of Sarah’s life. That she has a cancer indicates she has little time left, which is similar to one more month to go before the end of the year. November is not the end, so people still have time to enjoy life, but it’s so close to the end that they seem to be in a hurry. They have to be ready for the end before its arrival . Similarly Sarah had to prepare herself for what would come at last.
November has 30 days, which is supposed to be not too long nor too short; it's just enough to be meaningful.
( to be continue...)
